The Institute for Electrical Engineering in Medicine (IME) teams up with the University medicine and the Technical University of Applied Sciences Lübeck in a joint research project to develope an AI-based, patient-oriented diagnostics device for the diagnosis of eye diseases using smartphones. The Joachim Herz Foundation in Hamburg is supporting the joint PASBADIA project of the two Lübeck universities with around 1.3 million euros.
The PASBADIA-team consists of four institutions, each of which bringing in a unique competence. The team of Prof. Dr. Horst Hellbrück, Competence Center CoSA (Computer Science, Distributed Systems) of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Lübeck focuses on the aspect of telemetry and data dissimination, while the Institute for Electrical Engineering in Medicine of the University of Lübeck under the direction of Prof. Dr. Philipp Rostalski is responsible for developing explainable AI-solutions. Prof. Dr. Mathias Beyerlein, Laboratory for Ophthalmology of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Lübeck and his team will concentrate on the development of a smartphone extension in order to collect multispectral images of the eye. Medical expertise will be provided by Prof. Dr. Jost Steinhäuser, and his team from the Institute of Family Medicine at the University of Lübeck and his network. The PASBADIA project investigates the use of artificial intelligence for telemedical eye diagnostics. The acronym "PASBADIA" stands for "patient-oriented smartphone-based diagnostics with local and central AI platform for primary care in rural areas".
PASBADIA is the first project funded under the new "Engineering Sciences" funding priority of the Joachim Herz Foundation in Schleswig-Holstein. The cooperation between the University and the Technical University was deliberately chosen in order to bring different scientific cultures into dialogue with each other in an interdisciplinary and cross-institutional way.
